The striking thing about the Verna’s styling is the broad C-pillar and the very short boot-lid that makes it look almost hatch-like. It has a spacious interior and several features like auto¬matic climate control, electric door mir¬rors, etc. The Verna comes with 1.6 petrol or 1.5 diesel engines. The petrol has a variable valve timing system and the diesel a variable geometry turbo. This engine is extremely smooth and there is a surge of power once the turbo starts singing, transforming the Verna into a fiendishly fast car. It is very manoeuvrable and easy to drive, with the gear shifter action being effortless. The steering is precise but feels light at high speeds and the handling at the limit is also a little nervous. Fatter tyres and a stiffer suspension should help, and maybe Hyundai should look at a sports package. The ride and braking are reasonably good with ABS and discs on all four ends being avail¬able as an option. A must-have if you go in for the diesel.
