Luxurious Cars India
POSSIBLY THE MOST IMPORTANT exposition for commercial vehicles, the 62nd IAA Commercial Vehicle Show in Hannover attracted all those who matter. Inevitably, given the times, the focus was on green technol¬ogy and fuel economy, with almost all manufacturers displaying hybrids, gas-power, ultra-efficient vehicles, etc.
Automotive giant Volkswagen’s commercial vehicles arm, Volkswagen Nutzfahrzeuge (VWN) had on display their full range of vehicles including the Caravelle and the Crafter. Both are earmarked for sale in India by end 2008, as CBUs, and are aimed at luxury tour operators. The highlight of the VW stand was the Pickup design study. The production of the unnamed pickup is due to start in Argentina in late 2009 for the South American market. There are no plans for its introduction in India, but its basic platform could be used for an MUV for India in the future.
Mercedes-Benz, another large volume player with products across the range, were also in green mode, displaying no less than 11 green vehicles. They featured the Axor BlueTec Hybrid truck, the first hybrid prototype for use in long-distance travel. They also had the plug-in hybrid Sprinter van, a high-effi¬ciency concept diesel van, the Vito Blue Efficiency and the I 2-ton Mercedes-Benz Atego BlueTec Hybrid that is already in the market. Stablemate Freightliner showed off its M2e Hybrid truck, that is already in use with customers in the US.
Behemoth DAF showed all its models in EEV (Enhanced Environmentally-friendly Vehicles) versions, which have 50 per cent less particulate emissions than the Euro 5 standard of 2009 requires. Also on show was their LF hybrid truck, slated for production next year. Swedish giant Scania introduced the new EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) lineup that meets Euro 5 emission standards without after-treat¬ment and without the need for additives, and also the new 9-litre diesel-ethanol that can give CO2 savings of up to 90 per cent.
Volvo displayed the 7700 Hybrid, its first hybrid bus which is 30 per cent more fuel-efficient than non-hybrid models. It was not just all buses and tippers at the IAA. Mitsubishi showed off its stunning Fuso Canter Eco-D hybrid concept and Ford also had their fantastic looking new European spec Fiesta in panel van guise.
